Fire At Burlington Mill Stops Traffic On South Church St.

Fire crews were on the scene of a fire at McMichael Mills on South Church Street near the Food Lion Westbrook Plaza.

DSC00015The two-alarm fire closed South Church Street between Williamson Avenue and Westbrook Avenue for more than two hours.

Plant manager Harold Dixon told Phoenix14 that the fire started when a contractor was working on an air duct that had a leak. “Flame from his blow torch that we was using to weld the duct caught the leaking substance on fire,” Dixon said.

The worker ran in the front office and told them to call 911.

Alamance Co. Communications says the fire call came in around noon.  Dixon said that damage was contained mostly to front half of building. Workers on the second shift resumed operations at 4:00pm.

Mike Hinnets with the Burlington Fire Department said the fire was contained because of steps that plant workers took to contain the fire. “They used all the precautions. Closed fire doors, evacuated everyone.”DSC00019

The fire inconvenienced Burlington drivers as parts of South Church Street were closed from Williamson to just past Westbrook Drive. Officials re-opened the westbound lanes of South Church just after 3:00 pm.
