Student Calls In False Report In Wake Of Indecent Exposure Incidents
An Elon student is out on bond after being arrested for calling in a false police report according to Elon Chief of Police LaVell Lovette.
Lovette said the female student called 911 Thursday claiming that a man, similar to the men involved in indecent exposure incidents Monday night, was following her.
The student said she was in Moseley parking lot when a man pulled up beside her. She called 911.
In an attempt to discover the suspect’s identity, Campus Police pulled security video footage from the parking lot. Police determined there was no suspect on the video and pulled the student in for questioning.
The student then confessed to making the whole thing up.
“She was interviewed and finally admitted that she lied,” Lovette said. “We definitely don’t need to be dealing with false reports. We don’t need to be wasting our time on that.”
UPDATE: Sotolongo spoke to Phoenix14News and said the call to 911 was legitimate. She said she was being followed and proceeded to get in her car and call 911. Sotolongo said she is disappointed that her concerns were not taken seriously. More on this during our live show on Monday.
The Elon Police has been investigating two indecent exposure reports from this week. Chief Lovette says the false report distracted her officers from finding the real suspects.
Lovette told Phoenix14News that Campus Police arrested the student Friday morning, but Campus Police would not confirm this and refused to release her name.
The Alamance County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed that Emilia Sotolongo was booked through the county jail. She is charged with false report to police radio. Sotolongo is a sophomore at Elon.
Sotolongo was released Friday on $300.00 bond according to Alamance County court records.

I hope Phoenix 14 is looking into talking to the student about these accusations. As an Elon student, I can say that the recent Smith Jackson emails about frequent assaults on females has been alarming. There may be deeper reasons for this girl’s mistake.

This is funny. Why would someone make that type of crap up?

Did she have a lawyer present since she went to the county jail to be questioned? It sounds like there are very different versions to this story between the student and the police.

oh be quiet concerned. CLEARLY this isn’t a matter of miranda rights or rights to a lawyer or any of that ish. She broke the law and did something HORRIBLE, and for that she deserves this to go on her permanent record, so to speak.

Can Emilia just shut up? She’s going to make herself look worse. Don’t admit to making something up and then try to tell the press you didn’t make it up. Somebody doesn’t know public relations!

Adam you should not be telling anyone to shut up since all you do is run your mouth.

Excuse you, but I did not make up a story and THEN proceed to call the cops on it, in the process diverting Elon Police’s attention away from the real bater and endangering the lives of students at Elon. So, yes, I have a right to speak in this situation. Emilia should be expelled from Elon.

the fact that someone craves attention this much is absolutely absurd. this girl can lie all she wants… but i am pretty sure all are well aware of the truth. nobody walks all the way to moseley from provence (as she is now claiming she did). even if someone did, why would they wait until moseley to call the police? i am sure in her hindsight, she probably devised this story to try to keep her at elon. there should be one verdict – suspension. she can try to garner – or rather solicit – support from her friends, but the perpetual cycle of lying will get her no where. attention-seeking behavior can really come back to bite you…

senior, the article says “she was being followed and proceeded to get in her car” she didn’t walk all the way from provence. I think judging by the Elon PD’s treatment of students in the past, they probably just looked at the footage, said no one was there [which they wouldn't be if they followed her there and didn't park] and then didn’t let her defend herself. Or she was so shaken up by being interrogated and accused that she acted unsure of her story, so they assumed she was lying. I’m having a hard time figuring out who to believe.

I can’t believe Emilia did this. It is so selfish to make an unnecessary 911 call; other people could have needed emergency assistance during the time they were pulling resources for a false alarm. She’s in college for God’s sake! Elon students are supposed to follow the honor code: Honesty, Integrity, Responsibility and Respect. She should be disciplined for acting outside these parameters: this student is giving the university and other Elon students a bad name!
