Students Fed Up with “Aggressive” Parking Policy
Julie Morse
The sun is shining, the birds are chirping and the last thing students want to deal with are parking tickets.
Freshman Tricia Teeter got a parking ticket from campus security for parking in a visitor’s spot at the Moseley Center.
“I parked for about ten minutes to run in and check my mail and by the time that I got out I had a parking ticket for $50,” Teter said.
That same ticket would have cost Tricia just ten dollars if the town of Elon had fined her.
That has Tricia wondering why the school charges so much more
“I just don’t understand why they are so expensive; I just think they are very over priced,” she said.
And that makes her wonder where that money goes. Gerald Whittington, the University’s Senior Vice President for Business, Finance and Technology, says the money is considered general revenue for the university.
“They just go into all the other revenues that we have from tuition, and room & board, and whatever other revenues we have,” Whittington said.
On average the university collects about $30,000 in parking fines. That is almost equivalent to one student’s tuition.
In the past, money has gone to improve campus safety by adding things like lights, cameras, and door swipes.

I think that is really lousy..parking is always such an issue on campus’ but why not have a short term parking bay. This would allow someone to stop, pick up mail, or a friend, or drop something in for a limited amount of time..say 15, and not get a ticket. There could be maybe 5 parking spots allocated for this. Work with the students, Elon and give a little. Wouldn’t that be nice.
