Finan appeared in court Monday, he has decided to hire his own attorney instead of one provided by the state. Steers did not appear, according to one of Phoenix14′s reporters at the courthouse.
Finan will return to court on April 30th at 9 a.m. Steers court date is scheduled for the same date and time.
According to the judge, the felony charge for intent to sell and deliver, which Finan and Steers both face, has a maximum punishment of 24 months in prison. The misdemeanor charges faced by the students each carry a maximum of four months in prison.
Two Elon freshmen appeared in court Monday on drug-related charges.
Sean Thomas Finan and John Philip Steers were arrested Saturday night on felony charges for possession with intent to sell and deliver along with misdemeanor charges for possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and maintaining a dwelling.
Police seized 7.2 grams of marijuana from their Barney dormitory rooms.
Finan and Steers were placed in the Alamance County Jail under a $2,500 bond.

Freshman Joseph Allen Flynn was arrested Tuesday evening and made his first appearance in court today.
Flynn is due back in court on April 19.
According to the police report, Flynn is charged with felony possession of marijuana, felony possession with intent to sell and deliver, felony manufacturing marijuana, felony maintaining a dwelling house for drugs, misdemeanor possession of a fake driver’s license and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
A felony possession means he had more than one and a half ounces of marijuana.
A digital scale, six multi-colored smoking devices, 30 small Zip-Lock baggies, a “priority mail box with baggies and VAC,” two Ohio state drivers licenses and $1,205 were seized from Flynn’s residence in the Danieley Center according to the police report.
Flynn was transported to Alamance County Jail and was released this morning after posting $30,000 bail.
